Statue and Cornerstone from St. Mel High School
Dedication of Statue and Cornerstone from St. Mel High School
Joe Cosentino, Louie Cuevas and Manuel Galvan represented the Class of ’67 at an October 16, 2012 dedication of the 1917 St. Mel High School cornerstone with a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus atop it. It was the same statue that stood in the East Building for decades.
Some 50 St. Mel alumni, Christian Brothers and staff attended the ceremony.
The statue had been "lost," scattered among the garden grounds of the Christian Brothers home at Lewis University. Thanks to the work of the Class of ’59, the statute was identified as a St. Mel relic and now sits on the cornerstone in a peaceful garden.
There are two plaques. One reads, “This statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stood at the top of the main stairs in the East Building at St. Mel High School.” The other – “This cornerstone from the East Building of St. Mel High School commemorates 52 years of Lasallian education. We remember the Christian Brothers who continued the ministry of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the alumni of St. Mel whose lives they touched.”
